Start point: Winchester - Frederick County Visitor Center. 1360 S. Pleasant Valley Road. From parts East: Take I-95/495 to exit 8, Route 50 west. Winchester is 60 miles west. Alternative is to take I-66 west to where Route 17 North exits to the right taking you to the junction of Route 50 and Route 17. This saves numerous traffic lights on the way. From parts North: Use I-81 south to exit 313, Route 50 west. At the first traffic light turn right and follow signs to visitor center. Event Info: Jan-Mar, 11am-4pm, Apr-Nov 9am-5pm; Dec 11am-4pm. Closed major holidays. Trail is rated as 1+, suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. Pets must be leashed. Route is primarily on sidewalks along city and residential streets with some natural surface around local park and lake. Winchester is the northern gateway to the Shenandoah Valley. It was an area of major activity during the Civil War. The directions include historical information for Winchester points of interest. My favorite section of the hike is through the walking only area in the renovated old downtown. Great spot to stop off and enjoy the hike German style.
