THE POTOMAC LIGHTS
The Pacesetters will be hosting their first ever guided night walk on Saturday, June 9, 2001, and it promises to be another unique walking experience. The event will have a starting window from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm and you must finish by 11:00 pm. The event will have participants leaving the Pentagon Athletic Center in groups with an experienced trail guide at 10 minute intervals. The trail will take participants to the entrance of Arlington National Cemetery, with a view of the new Women's Memorial, and past the lighted Marine Corps Memorial where participants can view the sights of your nations capitol city. From this point, participants will pass through a small part of the surrounding community to cross the lovely Key Bridge with its lights reflecting off the Potomac River below, and enter Georgetown. The trail will bring you back in front of the famous Watergate Hotel and in front of the majestic Kennedy Center. Participants will then cross the Roosevelt Bridge that will offer a very impressive view of the National Cathedral from afar with its lights offering more than most can imagine. On the bridge, participants will have a great view of both Georgetown and Roosevelt Island. Leaving the bridge, participants will walk along the banks of the Potomac River, passing under the Memorial Bridge, with the many national monuments lighted and reflecting off the river, before entering the Lyndon B. Johnson ark and returning to the Pentagon.
Participants can reach the Pentagon by exiting off I-395, Exit 10, for Boundary Channel Drive and Pentagon North Parking. Event registration will begin at 6:30 pm with the first tour beginning as soon as it is full. Each group will have two guides, with flash lights, and water will be available along the route and our check point. Additionally, the Pacesetters will be offering their World Famous Wurst. Registration will be inside the Athletic Club by special arrangement with all facilities being available. Pets are welcomed at this event but participants are reminded that pets are not allowed inside the building and they must be on a leash at all times. The event will feature an "A" award patch of the National Cathedral as seen from the Roosevelt Bridge. Additionally, there will be an event unique T-shirt available for purchase. Additional event information is available by contacting Ron Hamner at 703-922-1885, evenings only after 6:30 pm, or e-mail via donmimi@erols.com or contacting the club via mail at 5505 Helmsdale Lane, Alexandria, VA 22315. Event brochures are available at Atlantic Region area events.
Since this is a "special" event, we felt it should have a "special" cause to support and we have partnered with the Washington Animal League for this event with a donation being made to the league in support of their animal shelters.
